Twenty-five years of official College Board score distributions - every AP exam, 2002 through 2026 - tell a story that is easy to miss one year at a time: pass rates that barely moved for fifteen years, then three program-wide shocks in six. Every exam, one river
Each strip below is one exam's complete score history. The colored bands show the share of students earning each score - 5s in blue on top, 1s in red at the bottom - and the dark line is the 3+ boundary: everything above it scored 3 or higher, the usual bar for college credit. The thinner the red and orange below the line, the higher the pass rate. Every row shares one time axis, so you can scan a year straight down the page - and with a mouse, hovering any strip shows that year's full 1-5 breakdown.

A few things worth noticing:
- The long plateau. Most rivers run nearly flat from 2002 through 2019 - Calculus BC, the world languages, and most of the sciences wobble by a few points a year for close to two decades.
- Short rivers are new exams. Physics 1 and 2 begin in 2015, Computer Science Principles in 2017, Precalculus and African American Studies in 2024.
- Rivers that stop are retired exams. Physics B, Computer Science AB, French Literature, Latin Literature, and the international English exam (APIEL) end where College Board discontinued them - they get their own group at the bottom.
- Italian's blank years are real. The exam was discontinued after 2009 and revived for 2012; the gap is the suspension, not missing data.
- World-language pass rates run high partly because the headline numbers cover all test takers, including heritage and native speakers. (College Board also publishes a "Standard Group" that excludes them - a story for a follow-up piece.)
Where the big shifts happened
Levels hide change. The grid below colors each exam-year by how much its 3+ share moved versus the prior year: teal is up, red is down. Read it by columns, not rows - when an entire column lights up, something happened to the program, not to one exam.

Three vertical stripes stand out:
- 2021 runs red. Full-length exams returned after 2020's shortened at-home format, and pass rates dipped almost everywhere - Psychology fell 18 points and English Literature 16.
- 2022 snaps back. English Literature jumped 34 points, the largest single-year move in the dataset - partly a rebound from the 2021 low, and partly the first official recalibration (next section).
- 2023-2025 runs teal. That is not a rebound. That is policy.
The recalibration wave
Starting in 2022, College Board began re-setting score standards exam by exam through a process it calls evidence-based standard setting. The old 1-5 cut scores mostly traced back to comparability studies - college students sitting AP exams so their grades could anchor the scale - and in some subjects those anchors were decades old. The new process sets the boundaries from evidence of what actually predicts success in the corresponding college course, including how AP students go on to perform there. In most subjects reviewed, that evidence said the old bars were too strict, so pass rates stepped up - and stayed up.
The waves, per College Board's own published score-change brief and its 2025 scoring update: English Literature, World History, and Biology in 2022; Chemistry (+21) and both Economics exams in 2023; US History (+25), US Government (+24), and European History (+12) in 2024; then nine subjects in 2025, led by English Language (+20), Physics 1 (+20), and Environmental Science (+15). Recalibration is not a one-way ratchet - Physics C Mechanics came down three points in its 2025 review, and Statistics and both Calculus exams have never been touched - but nearly every reviewed exam moved up, which drew scrutiny over whether AP scores were simply being inflated. College Board's answer: colleges keep reporting that AP students outperform peers in the follow-on course, so the old standards were mis-set, not the new ones.

English Literature is the sharpest case on the chart: its +34 in 2022 - the largest single-year move in the dataset - is genuinely two things at once, a rebound from a pandemic-depressed 2021 and the first recalibration. And 2020 deserves its asterisk: those exams were 45-minute, open-book, at-home tests covering reduced content, so treat that year's rates as their own thing. 2025 carries a second footnote - it was also the first year most AP exams were taken digitally.
What this means for your plan
A pass rate is not a difficulty ranking. Exams draw different students - Chinese Language's rate includes heritage speakers, and Physics C's reflects a self-selected group that already survived calculus. And after a recalibration, a score earned one year is not directly comparable to the year before: 54% of Chemistry students earned a 3 or higher in 2022, 75% in 2023 - for what College Board says is the same demonstrated ability.
